This award is being made to Dr. Daisaku Ikeda in recognition of his untiring pursuits of peace and love for humanity. He is the third President of the Soka Gakkai lay Buddhist organization and the founding President of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), which promotes a philosophy of character development and social engagement for peace.

Dr. Daisaku Ikeda was born in Tokyo, Japan, on January 2, 1928 to family of seaweed farmers. His early life was full of struggles. The destruction he witnessed as a teenager during World War II motivated him to work for peace by eradicating the fundamental causes of human conflict. In 1947, at the age of 19, he met his mentor and spiritual guide Josei Toda who was an educator and leader of the Soka Gakkai lay Buddhist society. The central tenet of Ikeda's thought is the fundamental sanctity of life, a value which Ikeda sees as the key to lasting peace and human happiness.

As an advocate of peace he has emphasized in his Peace Proposal 2015 on expansion of friendship through dialogue across differences in order to build a world of coexistence. According to him a self-directed transformation within the individual can lead to social transformation. This idea is expressed in his famous work, The Human Revolution. As a supporter of value based education he founded the Soka (value- creation) schools based on the principle of nurturing each student's unique creative potential and cultivating an ethic of peace, social contribution and global consciousness.

His extensive publications promote peace and international understanding. He has published his ideas on various subjects in the form of dialogues, peace proposals, philosophical writings, essays, addresses, poetry, novels and children’s literature. His numerous works have been translated and published in more than forty languages.

His ceaseless efforts have won him recognition in the form of innumerable honors and awards like Humanitarian Award, United Nations Peace Award, A. S. Pushkin Gold Medal, Global Excellence Award, Tagore Peace Award, Simon Wiesenthal Center International Tolerance Award and many other awards from countries and institutions around the world. He has been recognized for his poetry by gaining the Kenya Oral Literature Association Award and the Poet Laureate Award of the Association of World Poets.

He holds honorary doctorates from over fifty universities and is an honorary citizen of more than seven hundred and forty cities, states and local governments around the world worldwide in addition to this he is having honorary professorships in more than forty universities.

Indeed his commitment towards humanity makes himself a gift to humanity. For Jagran Lakecity University it is an honor to confer upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
